Note: When upgrading from software versions before 440r, it is recommended to create a backup and perform additional steps to ensure a smooth transition of data. The steps below have been broken up depending on use case.

Upgrading From Recent Software Versions

These instructions detail the steps for upgrading from EEGer4 440r+ to the latest software version.

  1. Before starting the installation process, disconnect the EEGer Security Dongle and EEG Amplifier if they are connected to the computer. They will be reconnected at a later stage of the installation process.
  2. Download the latest version of EEGer from the software’s support site. The latest version of EEGer will always be displayed at the top of the page.
    1. Direct Link: http://support.eeger.com/DownloadsE44.html
  3. On some web browsers the download may be marked as unsafe. If this occurs, the download must be manually completed:
    1. Open the web browser’s downloads section. This page can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+J on the keyboard.
    2. Expand the options for the download and click Keep or Save Anyway as needed to allow the file to download.
  4. Once the download has finished, locate and run the installer. By default, the installer should be saved to the computer’s Downloads folder.
  5. Windows may prompt to allow the installer to run. Click Yes to begin the installation process.
  6. The EEGer installer will open. The default installation settings are okay and do not need to be adjusted. Click NextInstallOK, and Finish when prompted to install EEGer.
  7. After the installation has completed, reconnect the EEGer Security Dongle and EEG amplifier.
  8. Open EEGer and observe any warning messages.

Note: Due to improvements to the feedback process, some games such as Lotus Pond and DVDGame may need to be updated to the latest version to be usable for live sessions. See this article for instructions on reinstalling extra games.

Upgrading From Older Software Versions or from 43 Software Branch

These instructions detail the steps for upgrading from versions of EEGer4 440 prior to the 440r software version. This process is more involved but required to ensure the proper migration of data and to ensure that all features of the new version are accessible.

Backing Up Existing EEGer Version

This will ensure that any existing EEGer files are backed up onto the computer. This will ensure that the new installation of EEGer does not override existing files and allows for the version to be quickly ‘rolled back’ if needed.

  1. Open the Windows File Explorer by pressing Win+E on the keyboard or navigating from the Start menu.
  2. Navigate to the computer’s C: drive and locate the EEGer folder.
  3. Right-click and Rename the folder. It’s recommended to rename the folder with the appropriate version or as “EEGerBackup” so that it is easy to identify during future steps.
Note: If Rename is not an option when right-clicking, select Show more options and then Rename.
  4. Once the EEGer folder has been renamed, close the Windows File Explorer.

Installing New Version

Transferring Client Files

Now that the latest version of EEGer has been installed, the existing EEGer files can be moved from the renamed EEGer folder to the new installation.

  1. Open the Windows File Explorer by pressing Win+E on the keyboard or navigating from the Start menu.
  2. Navigate to the computer’s C: drive and locate the renamed EEGer folder.
  3. Open the renamed EEGer folder and locate the CLIENTS subfolder. By default, this is where all EEGer client files are stored.
  4. Right-click on the CLIENTS subfolder and select Copy from the context menu. The contents of this folder are now copied to the clipboard and can be transferred to another location on the computer.
  5. Navigate back to the computer’s C: drive and locate the EEGer folder.
  6. Right-click the EEGer folder and select Paste from the context menu. This will begin copying existing client files to the new version of EEGer.
  7. Windows will display a prompt about asking to replace existing files. This refers to the demonstration data. It is okay to choose Ignore or Replace at this stage.
  8. Once the transfer has completed, open EEGer.
  9. Navigate to Client>Rebuild Client Index from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen. This should allow EEGer to rescan the CLIENTS folder and note the newly transferred files.
  10. To ensure this transfer was successful, press the Select Client button - the list of Client IDs should now reflect any previously created or installed clients, in addition to the demonstration clients.

Transferring Extra Games

As transferring games from an existing EEGer version can be difficult, and because EEGer may require updated versions of the games to work for live sessions, it is recommended to perform fresh installs of all of EEGer’s extra games for the connected license.

For instructions on reinstalling extra games, see this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Ensure that the CLIENTS subfolder was copied from the old computer to the new computer, and not the other way around.
    2. Ensure that the CLIENTS subfolder was not mistakenly copied directly into the C: drive - instead, it should be a subfolder located at C:/EEGer/CLIENTS.
    3. Ensure that the CLIENTS subfolder was not mistakenly nested within the existing CLIENTS folder found at C:/EEGer/CLIENTS/CLIENTS.
    4. Navigate to Client>Rebuild Client Index from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen. This should allow EEGer to rescan the CLIENTS folder and note the newly transferred files.
  • Clients Stored on Network Drive No Longer Visible
    1. Navigate to the EEGer/Preference/Settings subfolder on the EEGer backup version and locate the paths.nin file - copy this to C:/EEGer/Preferences/Settings of the new computer and restart the software.
    2. Instead of the above step, it is also possible to manually reenter the directory. Navigate to Options>EEGer Configuration Options>Data Locations to do this - please note that any network drive must be locally assigned a drive letter for EEGer to recognize it as a valid path.
  • What Support Options Are Available?

EEG Store is available to assist with this process and can generally complete a full transfer within a 30-minute appointment window. Our staff will help walk through the process in full, as well as catch and identify technical issues before they interfere with sessions.

For more information on the support that is available, see this article.
